Introduction
A Foundation Degree is a Higher Education qualification equivalent to the first two years of
a BA (Hons) degree programme. This FdA in Leadership and Management is a distinctive
course because it integrates work-based learning as a requirement for the national
qualification. Foundation degrees are primarily designed for people who are in work
environment so that new ideas can be taken back to their workplace in order to make an
immediate and direct impact to the host organisation and the learner’s job prospects.
The Foundation Degree is awarded by the University of Hertfordshire. You will also get two further qualifications from ILM.
You will also be considered a student
of the University and so have full benefits such as a 24/7 remote access to their intranet
and award-winning learning resources centre, giving you access to online text books,
journals and databases or access online tutorials and study skills support.
This degree will be ideal for learners who want to progress in their careers and are
beginning, or have aspirations to take on a more responsible role requiring leadership and
management skills.
Programme Rationale
The Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management is distinctive in that it integrates
academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and
programme providers. This innovative programme offers the opportunity for students in a
number of sectors and industries to enhance their skills and develop their potential as
leaders and managers. Students on this programme will be able to develop their
leadership and management skills through work base learning and by implementing their
knowledge within their employment or work experience context.
This course includes elements of vocational and work-based learning and also has a strong focus on
personal professional development. This collaboration promotes wider participation and
lifelong learning by encouraging participation by learners who may not previously have
considered studying for a higher level qualification. It can be undertaken by learners from a
wide range of backgrounds but they will need to demonstrate the ability to benefit from the
programme either by their academic qualifications or through relevant work experience.
Students who
have successfully completed this programme will be able to progress to the final year of
the BA (Hons) Management at the University of Hertfordshire or other University Degree
Courses such as the BA (Hons) in Business and Enterprise.
Work-Based Learning Programmes
The Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management embraces ‘learning by doing’ and
its students are employed and/or have access to work placement. It builds upon a long
history of design and delivery of vocational qualifications in higher education, and is
intended to equip learners with the skills and knowledge relevant to their employment,
satisfying the needs of employees and employers and the QAA Foundation Degree
Qualification Benchmark. Because of the emphasis on work-based learning, a good
proportion of the learning will take place in your workplace as you relate new knowledge
and skills to work practices.
In cases where learners are unemployed, the College will support applicants in them in
search for appropriate work however, this is not a guarantee. Unemployed learners may
still join the program however it is their responsibility to find a suitable a working
environment that will enable them to meet the assessments requirements of the course.
Programme Assessment
An important element of the programme is that a significant amount of the learning
takes place in the workplace and assessments are work based complemented by
reflective reviews designed to enable learners to implement their learning on a live
project. Learners will be expected to complete all 13 units in
order to be awarded the professional qualification and the degree.
Programme Duration and Attendance
The course is offered on a full time basis working on a 36 week year with 15 hours
classroom attendance per week for workshops and classes.
